More Information On Our Workshop Holidays






Workshop Format

The workshop commences with afternoon tea and homemade cakes at 4pm on Sunday. Guest rooms are available from 3.00. Refreshments are available. Cumbrian Supper is served at 7 pm, followed by the introduction to the workshop, discussion of what you want to get out of the retreat.

Escorted Days

After a full Cumbrian breakfast served at 8.30, guests select their menus for packed lunch and dinner. After breakfast guests leave with Mark to the agreed location for the day.

Painting and drawing alongside Mark and experienced guests artists. Late afternoon, Mark and the guests return to the house. Guests then relax or have the opportunity to paint and draw in the studio.

Evening Sessions

These are held each evening and provide one of the key learning opportunities with the artist who can help and advise. On a couple of the evenings are inspirational talks about materials and artists.

Non Painting Partners & Friends are Welcome (Dogs inc)

Non painting friends and partners are welcome to come with you. We can offer a range of things you can do, from amazing walks and drives through the surrounding fells and mountains. If houses and castles interest you we can

point you in the right direction. 5 nights are £500 and for 3 nights £300.

Public Transport and Phones

Please be aware that in the Eden Valley public transport is limited. The quiet country lanes are ideal for cycling and walking. If you choose to come by train we can happily organise transport from Penrith or Appleby stations.

The region is sparsely populated and mobile phone signals are patchy.

What to bring

  • waterproofs and Fleece
  • walking Boots with good ankle support
  • soft inside shoes or slippers
  • samples of your work so we can understand were you are at
  • your art materials - or we can supply brushes, paints, pens, canvasses and pads through our shop
  • a camera or camera phone
  • Yourself and a positive attitude, remembering that as well as improving your artistic skills you are on holiday!

About the Artist

The lead tutor, a working artist, Mark Hilsden who for over twenty years has specialised in creating pen and ink architectural portraits from cottages, to castles, including farmhouses and hotels. His work is held in numerous private collections across the UK, USA, Australia and Hong Kong.

Over the last few years he has started painting landscape and spacescapes inspired by the dark night skies of Cumbria.

The artist owns Castle Fine Arts, a studio gallery that showcases regional artists supporting artists with art materials, classes and workshops.
